Silvia Ramirez

Snow WhiteI started drawing when I was in a special school. I learned how to do it when people would say to me, “Can you draw this small picture?” If I could do it straight then I would get a candy. That’s when I realized I could make art. The teachers noticed my drawings, and they said that they would take me to McDonalds or to the circus if they could have one of my drawings. My brother would ask me to draw cartoons for my nieces and nephews. Now they are big, but when they were little they would ask for Batman, Superman, and Spiderman. I have found a lot of people who want to take my drawings for free, try to steal them because they are good. They were making me sad trying to take my drawings. But I would rather make art in the studio where I can get paid.

I have a lot of people who visit the studio tell me that they like my artwork, and ask me how I do it. I draw the pictures first on a wood board with pencil, then outline with black marker, then color with water paints. I like to make the little pictures large. When I am drawing and erasing, people are teasing me and saying that I can’t do it. But when I’m done with the drawing they say, “Oh Silvia! It’s good! I’m sorry that I said you can’t do it!” When it’s finished they are saying to me, “I like it! I like it!”
