Arts of Life Artists Participate in “Great Wall of Chicago”

Arts of Life artists are proud to be involved in the Great Wall of Chicago mural. Headed up by Stef Garland of Earth Squad Productions, the mural starts at Bloomingdale and Milwaukee Avenues and goes west all the way to California Ave.

Spanning 24 city blocks, this would make it the longest continuous mural in the whole city of Chicago. Arts of Life is currently collaborating with Cooperative Image Group on a kite-themed panel of the wall.

We’ll be needing monetary donations for supplies, so if you would like to contribute, let us know!

Arts of Life Annual Summer Exhibit

ARTS OF LIFE will open its doors on June 16th at 6pm for it’s annual summer art exhibition. 13 artists belonging to the ARTS OF LIFE studio will be showcasing new works in a silent auction with an average starting bid of $250. Admission to this event is $25, which includes beer compliments of Chicago Beverage Systems, wine and hors d’oeurvres. Auctioning begins at 7 o’clock and ends at 8 with a raffle, featuring such prizes as Chicago White Sox Jose Contreras signed baseball, a wine and salumeria party hosted by Gibson’s Bar and Steakhouse and One hour massage, manicure and pedicure certificates from Siren Salon. Non-auctioned art will also be available at prices ranging from $60 to $500. This ARTS OF LIFE event is sponsored in part by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Erickson Design.

From Silvia Ramirez’s genius renditions of popular figures such as Betty Boop and Batman to Mark Germano’s architecture and design inspired color abstractions, ARTS OF LIFE artists explore the obsessive, unself-conscious pleasures of creation. The first thing you will notice when you enter the studio is a prolific use of color, form and expressionist imagery. Mediums exhibited range from oil pastels to collage, acrylics, and photography frequently displayed on recycled windows and wooden boards. The 13 featured artists work within a wonderland of outsider art by delving into abstract expressionism, portraiture and landscape, all expressive of individual style and technique.

ARTS OF LIFE is an artist community that provides adults with developmental disabilities an environment to experience personal growth. Opened in 2000, under the direction of Denise Fisher ARTS OF LIFE was the first program in Chicago to provide employment in the arts for adults with developmental disabilities. The studio serves as both a day center and creative home for its artists. Funded partly by the Department of Human Services ARTS OF LIFE also depends on fundraising efforts and grants to sustain itself. Articles on ARTS OF LIFE have appeared in the Chicago Reader, Chicago Time Out, Chicago Social and the Chicago Tribune. Artist’s work can be viewed at 12 Starbucks locations throughout the City as well as Savor the Flavor in Lincoln Park and Janik’s Sub shop in Wicker Park. Carl Hammer, a reknown outsider art dealer, recently brought ARTS OF LIFE pieces to an annual outsider art fair in New York. ARTS OF LIFE’s most recent exhibition was part of the 2007 Intuit Show of Folk and Outsider Art in participation with Chicago Artropolis.

- Making a living as an artist is not easy. That’s why a number of Chicago businesses are helping artists with disabilities showcase their art works.

The artists with developmental disabilities are part of the non-profit Arts of Life studio. They are amazingly talented, which is why businesses owners are proud to display.”Arts of Life, I love their artwork,” said Geri Schapira, owner of a Lincoln Park coffee shop called Savor the Flavor. “I love having it here. I think it adds a lot of character to the shop. The customers love it and I’m really proud to have it here.”Over in Wicker Park at Janik Cafe, owner Felippa Janik is learned about Arts of Life artists from her regular customers.”They asked me if they could if they could hang up some posters, I mean pictures. They told me, you know, that our group of people that are from the age of twenty who do some art,” Janik said. “I didn’t know exactly know what sort of art but what really moved me was the fact their they were people with disabilities.”Both cafes have sold a number of paintings. All the profit goes to Arts of Life.”All the money goes directly back into the studio to help pay for space, materials and help us organize events, and then, the artists are paid a monthly stipend for their work here,” said Nicholas Schutzenhofer, a Studio staff member.Arts of life is a serious artist community.’All of the artists here sort of make up a board of directors, and they vote on whether or not they think a potential artist will be a good fit with the community,” Nicholas said.

Talent is not the only requirement.

“Everyone in here has been diagnosed with a mild to profound mental retardation so that is one of the stipulations then that you have to be living in sort of a community living arrangement,” said Nicholas.

Both Geri and Felippa have future plans for these artists.

‘ We’re hoping to get some sort of Art Gallery show for them one day,” Geri said.

“We’re gonna put more I mean more too bad that they ding anymore because I love their art,” said Felippa.

Brainstorm Installation at the Chicago Cultural Center

Tuesday, March 20: Join us for the installation of Brainstorm,
Chicago Rooms of the Chicago Cultural Center, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm.
Created with artist Jim Elniski over a period of five weeks by the artists of Arts Of Life, Esperanza, and Project Onward, Brainstorm is “a sculpture and an event.” Meet the artists and watch Brainstorm come to life!
It will be made of flexible wood slats collaboratively woven by the artists onto a large tornado-shaped iron rod armature. All of the slat will be painted and/or collaged with printed images by the participating artists. The concept for this work reflects a four year creative process facilitated by the artist Jim Elniski with some of organizations that seeks to strengthen these artists’ identification of themselves as part of a larger community.
