May’s First Friday Bands have been announced!

Chicago’s Claw Toe will be headlining at 9:15 PM.

Nebraska’s Golden Hour will be the first band at 7 PM
The Golden Hour is Ashley Buck (piano/vocals) and Joe Rempe (drums). The couple sees each performance as its own journey. They intend to delight and entertain music lovers with their simple sincerity and enthusiasm. Back home in Nebraska, Ashley has quickly become well known for her classical-folksy style keyboard play, and lyrics. As for Joe, his influences range from roots to blues, adding groove to the lyrical plateaus and direction to the meandering melodies. The two songwriters create a musical experience that is truly Americana, dabbling in all forms of traditional musical storytelling: folk and country, jazz and blues, and of course a little bit of rock and roll. Their live show has been described by many as a calm and uplifting trip. Find out more at http://www.wix.com/thegoldenhour/us#!

OPEN MIC from 8 to 9 PM – sign up is from 7 to 8 pm.

ART OR NO ART gameshow at 6:30 PM and 7:45 PM

HOW WE MAKE IT art show – works of Arts of Life staff, volunteers, plus founder Veronica Cuculich.

‘How We Make It’ Gallery Event Celebrates the Life of Its Founding Artist

The Arts of Life, a Chicago non-profit organization dedicated to fostering artistic growth in developmentally disabled adults, is pleased to announce the opening of its latest art show How We Make it at the Arts of Life Studio and the Kinzie Corridor Arts Gallery at 2010 W. Carroll Ave. The opening event, taking place on Friday, April 6th from 6 pm-10 pm, will also serve as a heartwarming celebration of the studio’s founding artist Veronica Cuculich.
How We Make It will showcase the talents of the Arts of Life staff, interns and volunteers in recognition of the support they’ve given the studio and its artists. Some of the participating artists are working on their art pieces side-by-side in the gallery from March 16th to 30th to further demonstrate the spirit of creative collaboration.
Accompanying the art opening will be a memorial for founding artist Veronica Cuculich whose extraordinary life and art continues to inspire the Arts of Life community. During the event, there will be a viewing of the documentary feature Life and Where I’m At: The Life and Art of Veronica Cuculich, which showcases Ms. Cuculich’s important role in the creation of the Arts of Life.
Afterward, guests will perform in a themed open mic limited to songs written or inspired by Elvis, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton and Ms. Cuculich herself. There will also be a potluck dinner featuring all of Ms. Cuculich’s favorite foods—pulled pork, Italian food, fruit, macaroni and cheese, Oreos, pizza, pudding and coffee.
The opening is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome.

The event takes place February 16th at the Winnetka Community House. The Arts of Life program challenges to go further every year in their goals towards greater independence, self-respect, artistic output, and community building. The Annual Awards Show is a wonderful celebration where we honor our artists for all of their accomplishments in the previous year.

Our community localized in your area includes a huge amount of parents with sons and daughters with developmental disabilities. They often struggle to find businesses that understand their needs. By advertising in the 2012 program, you can show these parents that you are making a commitment to the disability community and they can feel confident in going to you with their business.
