Debbie Vasquez

Debbie continues to develop her mixed-media works using paint pens and acrylic paints. The immediacy of her approach brings a strong sense of freedom to the work. With a long history of working abstractly, Debbie has a keen sense of how to balance repetition and variation. When not working with paint pens and acrylic, Debbie also does collage work and drawing.

Artist’s Statement

My birthday is March 12th. I grew up with my parents. I have a sister. I went to Niles High School and graduated.

I like animals. I like dogs. I miss Denise’s dog. I like to draw circles, flags and animals. I like butterflies. I like boats. I like them in the water. Designs, lines, flowers, babydolls, houses, rainbows, people, apples, candy canes, Christmas, holidays, basketball. Flowers grow from seeds.

Art is cool! When I make art I use all kinds of things: paint marker on window, paint on windows. I did a collage with paper on the windows. Paper mache. Collage that I draw on with black marker. Sculpture, I use wooden boxes and glue. Also I do sewing and photography.

My family looks at my pictures – they say “That’s Debbie’s!”. I like to dance. CD’s are great. Cowboy CD’s. Art makes me feel good. I like to come to the studio. I like to be on the website and in shows and in photos. I like to show people my art.

I’m inspired by being. By Grandma and Denise, people in the studio, different shapes, [by my]collections of newspaper pictures and articles about Arts of Life, insects and spiders, holidays. That’s it.

I like to go to Starbucks and downtown. I like Nick and Ryan. I like hot chocolate, Bobby, Barbara, Christine, Jeanette, and Ronnie. I like pictures and singing like at February’s awards show. I miss Mom.
