Lillian Coffill

A combination of expressive line work with oil pastel and layers of acrylic color make up the engaging work of Lillian Coffill. Sometimes the subject is very specific, whether it be flowers or clowns. At other times, vague amorphous shapes draw one in. They are just as familiar as unknown. Her rapid delineation traces out graceful, yet rough-edged forms that hint at the story without completely giving it away.

Artist’s Statement

I like to make art because it’s fun.

I draw people dancing because I can dance, I learned how to dance myself. I do the jitterbug and the cha cha and the polka and the mambo and the tango, I go to dances with senior citizens.

I use all kinds of different things in my art. I use brushes and paint, I make collages, and I make jewelry. I make beads by cutting out strips of newspaper and gluing them around a pencil, then when they’re dry I take them off the pencil and put the string through the bead. Sometimes I paint the beads. I make all kinds of presents for my friends too, necklaces and cards. I hope to sell the artwork that I make at the studio. I like flowers, all kinds of beautiful flowers, they give me ideas.
