Mark switched from oil to acrylic a few months ago and has quickly created a fresh new series of bright, spontaneous works on wood made of strong lines and unmixed primary and secondary colors.
He contrasts blocky geometric shapes of man-made buildings with organic shapes of trees and flowers, packing them next to each other and ordering them with uniform spacings.
Mark’s continuing interest in architecture and arrangement has gained a new sense of looseness and freedom because of his new use of acrylic paint. His natural consistency and precision have been balanced with hints of impulsiveness and playfulness.
Artist’s Statement
I live at the Ward in Chicago, I walk to Arts of Life. I am a dishwasher at Lawry’s. I like working there, downtown on the weekends.
I like my life, I like to paint. I like painting on canvas and plywood. I like to use oil colors and pastel crayons. I make all kinds of designs. I make what I want, and that’s it. I think it’s great and I enjoy doing it. I just like it because it’s part of my self-esteem.
My paintings are good because I am good hearted. I don’t want to waste paint. I like to use what I have. I know paint is expensive. I like painting colors, like stained glass, like colored windows. I like to make new paintings. I want to give my old ones away. I just don’t want them anymore.
I like to sign my name on the back in case people want to know whose painting it is. I want people to buy them. I want to sell them for more funds- $75,000.
I like to earn money, more funds: $10,000. I wish we had our own building to ourselves. I’d like to have a bakery/restaurant. I’d like to be doing baking too. I just need a million dollars.
