Mike uses his canvas as a visual record of his thoughts. Thoughts layer on to thoughts as he goes to the canvas from one day to the next.
Mixtures of seemingly unrelated text and images, figures of varying sizes, flat perspective, as well as visible cover-ups and corrections give the sense that one is looking at a graffiti-covered wall created over a long period of time.
Most paintings, like photographs, will capture a moment in time. Mike’s work, however, gives the impression that it is showing several moments at once.
Artist’s Statement
I’m Mike. I’ve been at Arts of Life for about a year now. I love to draw. I care about my family and friends and like to draw them. I also love to draw about my life.
I like to watch cartoons, eat at restaurants, and act in plays. I was in a production of The Jungle Book over the holidays. I was in the play Cinderella in the springtime.
I like to do lots of different things and share my life in my art. I like to do artwork, painting. I paint pictures of my family. Painting comes naturally.
I’m kind, I’m 27 and I live in Brookfield near the zoo. I saw Clay Aiken at a Christmas concert.
